Leptiles
Caretta caretta
Loggerhead turtle
Family Cheloniidae. It is a sea turtle breeding in the northernmost area
among the sea turtles. In Kushimoto, it lands on the beach every year from
May to August, and lays eggs. It usually lays about 100 eggs, and baby
turtles hatch after 60 days. Baby turtles right after hatching are the
carapace length of about 4cm and the weight of about 20g. When they grow
up, they are the carapace length of about 1m, and are often over the weight
of 100kg. In our aquarium, we succeeded in the first breeding of the loggerhead
turtle in the world in 1995. Since that, our loggerheads have laid eggs
and hatched every year. |
