Although sponges have many types of shapes and colors, all of them suck down water from little holes that are on the body surface, and eat microorganisms and organic matters that lives in the water. Also, they pour out water from the holes that are open.

From the beginning, the sponges that people use during bath and dish wash are made from sponges and the fellows. Now in japan, we do not see much of natural sponges but compound sponges made from urethane.
